Tile sheet creator

Welcome to the gamedeveloperstudio live tile sheet creator, a quick flexible tool for setting up tile sheets

These days most game engines come with extensive tools for creating tile maps but there are few tools available which will help you to create the base tile sheets from which your tile maps are made.[hyperbole] Use this tool to set your tile sheets faster than it takes photo shop to load. [/hyperbole]

This tile sheet creator is a tile sheet creation tool which will help you easily generate tile sheet atlas textures. Tile sheet creator lets you upload tiles from mulitple locations and tile sets, render tile sizes on the fly and organise tile locations on the sheet with snap-to tile placement so you will never misalign your tiles again. The simple drag and drop functionailty of tile sheeter will make creating your tile sheets a breeze.

The Basics

Step one: Dimensions

Set up your dimensions. How big would your like your tile sheet to be?. At what size do you wish to draw your tiles?

Step two: Add some tiles

Add individual tiles to the palette then drag and drop them onto your sheet. You can add tiles at any time, if you're adding multiple tile sets to the same tile sheet it's useful to add one set before adding the next set tiles to the palette.

Step three: Export

Once you have positioned all your tiles onto the tilesheet you're ready to export. If you don't care about the size of the sheet you tile sheet creator will trim unused area. otherwise don't forget to set keep dimentions.

Tile sheet creator advanced functions

setting tile sheet size

Tile sheet size represents the area where you can position your tiles. If you don't know how much space you need before creating your tile set you can set your tile sheet to a much larger size than you expect neccessary. later you can trim any unused area from the completed tile sheet. If you run out of space whilst creating your tile sheet you can change the area at any time during the creation process.

Setting tile dimensions

Tile dimensions refer to the the size at which you would like to draw your tiles on the tile sheet. Tiles can be drawn at any size you wish. If you are importing tiles at 256 pixels by 256 pixels you can set the tile size to 128 pixels by 128 pixels and tile sheet creator will automatically resize the tiles on the canvas for you. Tiles don't have to be square, You can set your target tile size height and width dimensions to any size. It's worth noting that if you draw your tiles at a large size than the tile images natural size you will lose resolution quality.

You can also set this to use uploaded tile size. but you will manually have to set the grid to that size or you will get unexpected results when setting your tiles.

Setting grid size

be positioned relative to this grid so it's important that the grid is set to the current size of your tiles.

Adding an existing tile sheet

You can extend and develop an existing tile sheet by importing it as a background image and setting it'sX and Y coordinated accordingly. You can then place tiles over the top of the background image. When you export the tile sheet, the background image will also be exported.

Adding tiles

You can add tiles to the project by opening the palette panel from the left hand menu. Select the "add tiles button" and navigate to your tiles. Once added the tiles will appear in the palette panel

The defualt view of tiles on the palette panel is thumbnail view. Sometimes it can be difficult to see which tile is which via the thumbnail view. you can switch to list view using the view change icons at the top right of the panel. List view will display the tile's file name, natural dimensions and file type.

Removing tiles from the palette

If you have uploaded a tile to the palette that you no longer wish to use you can use the bin icon under the palette thumbnail to remove the tile from the project. Please note that removig a tile from the project will alos remove the tile from the tile sheet.

Positioning a tile

You can position a tile on the tile sheet by simply dragging it from the palette to the tile sheet area. To avoid confusion an to let you know which tiles have been set on the sheet tile sheet creator will hide placed tiles from the palette. This hand feature will allow you to avoid skipping or omiting tiles. If you really need a tile to appear twice on your tile sheet see the clone feature.

Overwriting tiles

When you drag a tile onto the canvas there's a chance you could accidently drop it onto an already positioned tile. You can decide what you would like tile sheet creator to do in this instance. You can allow the tile to be over written or you can block tile overwriting. Use the "over write placed tiles" check box to configure this functionality. If you do overwirte a positioned tile and there are no other copies of this tile on the tile sheet, Tile sheet creator will return the overwritten tile to the palette to placed again.

Removing placed tiles

You can removed placed tiles by simply dragging the tile off the tile sheet area or back onto the palette. You can also hold down the E key on the keyboard and click on the placed tile you wish to remove. This hot key feature is handy if you wish to remove a lot of tiles.

Recalling tiles

If you're not happy with your progress you can use the recall all tiles button this will recall all placed tiles from the tile sheet to your palette. If you have a significant amount of tiles already placed you will be prompted by the browser alert to confirm that you wish to proceeed with the action.

Cloning placed tiles

If you need a tile to appear on your tile sheet more than once you can clone an already placed tile by holding the "c" key on the keyboard and dragging the placed tile you would like to clone.

Inverting tiles

If your tile sheet comes without flipped versions you can flip invert tiles on the tile sheet horizontally and vertically. Hold the "h" key on the keyboard and click the the placed tile you would like to invert horizontally. To flip vertically you hold the "v" key on the keyboard and click on the placed tile you would like to invert vertically.

Zooming in and out

ISometimes when working with small tile sheets it can be difficult to see which tile is which. Tile sheet creator has zoom functionality allowing you to work with both big tiles and small tile s a like. To zoom in and out use the + and - keys on the keyboard repectively. You can also use the zoom control panel on the the top left of the canvas area.

Exporting

Once you have set up your tilesheet to your liking you select the export button on the left hand menu. By defualt tile sheet creator will trim unused tilesheet area saving you memory when importing your atlas into your project. If you wish to maintain a set texture size you can select "maintain max dimentions".

You can also set the name of your tilesheet. It's probably worth appending the defualt grid size to the file name in case you wish to import the tile sheet later.
